It is estimated that the NHS spent over £6,000,000 on overweight and obesity related ill-health in the year 2014/15.
Annual spend on the treatment of obesity and diabetes is actually greater than the amount spent on the Police & the Fire service. Year after year people spend more and more money on diets that do not work. All of us have done it. It’s costing individuals a fortune and yet all we seem to end up with is frustration and more weight!
You may know that obesity increases the risk of developing lots of other diseases. An increased risk of certain cancers, more than 2 1/2 times more likely to develop high blood pressure and 5 times more likely to develop Type II diabetes.
A recent survey of more than 2000 UK adults uncovered almost half of people tried to lose weight in the last 12 months. What is frightening is that those who are trying to lose weight have been doing so virtually all the time! There is so much misinformation out there that no one knows whether they should eat fat or carbohydrates or a mixture of both! What they do know is that it’s costing them a fortune and they are still putting on the weight.
In a recent article in The Express it said that typically some people follow 55 fad diets during their lifetime costing them £30,000 yet only one in three lose weight and just one in five felt better in their new regimes.
What I find quite interesting is that people say that eating “real food” is too expensive and yet see what individuals spend going to weight loss classes or on ‘Diet’ foods. Don’t get me wrong, I think these weight loss classes are very good, while you go on them and keep paying the subscription but long-term people tend to drop off the wagon while people on a low-income can’t afford them.
Is there an alternative? I believe there is and I believe it has landed right on the church’s doorstep. We are always looking out for ways of how to reach out into the community and to serve any need that may be there. I believe at the moment that there is a desperate need, people who long to lose weight and to be a part of something in the local community where they feel valued. While I have thought about writing a health plan, I believe it would be more beneficial to take some excellent, evidence-based, scientifically proven best-selling books and work alongside them.
I have excellent testimonies from many that have switched to these healthy eating plans and I await permission from the author to share them. Men especially are going to love this; - In the first stage you are allowed to eat, example, Bacon & Eggs for breakfast, Steak for lunch & curry for tea!!!
